Javy Guerra threw 30 pitches in Tuesday night’s loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in Citizens Bank Park, but after the 30th, the veteran reliever motioned to the dugout that he couldn’t continue.
“He had a — his landing — his left hamstring tightened up on him,” Manager Davey Martinez told reporters after the 6-0 loss.
“He thought he could pitch through it and he said it grabbed him pretty good that last pitch he threw, so we had to get him out of there.
“He was throwing the ball pretty well too, so I asked him was it bothering him for a couple hitters, he said he could feel it but it wasn’t too bad, and then the last pitch he threw was bad.”
Martinez said before the third of four with the Phillies tonight that he was hoping Guerra’s hamstring still wasn’t that bad so that he could hopefully avoid a trip to the Injured List.
“He left here yesterday he said he felt fine. So we’re waiting for him to come in today and he’s going to see the trainer, so hopefully he’s okay,” Martinez explained.
“But we’ll see when he comes in. But he said he felt fine. I tried to call him this morning, he didn’t answer the phone. Some of these guys sleep till 1:00 in the afternoon, but hopefully he’s okay and maybe a day today and he’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”
Apparently, Guerra’s hamstring didn’t react as well as they’d hoped because an hour before the start of tonight’s game, the Nationals announced that Guerra was being placed on the 10-Day IL with a left hamstring strain.
Right-hander Kyle McGowin was called up to join Washington’s bullpen with Guerra going on the IL.
In 14 games this season, Guerra has put up a 4.02 ERA, a 4.49 FIP, seven walks, 13 Ks, and a .302/.371/.444 line against in 15 2⁄3 IP.
McGowin, 28, hasn’t pitched in the majors yet this year, after debuting in 2018 and making seven appearances (one start) for the Nationals in 2019.
